This week the Turtles learnt about Diwali. We first read the story of Rama and Sita. We then drew around our hands and decorated them in mehndi patterns and also made diva lamps out of model magic. As a school we celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. In Jellyfish class we moulded and decorated our own Diva lamps using model magic, drew around our hands for mehndi patterns and learnt the story of Rama and Sita. We looked at Remembrance day and why it is an important day. We then made our own poppies using a paper plate, some paint and card. Starfish enjoyed a great day on Tuesday to celebrate the beginning of our new topic ‘Seasonal Changes’. The children mixed, kneaded and rolled dough to make cute hedgehog bread rolls. We then started on the big job of making some delicious soup using seasonal vegetables. The children were brilliant at using the safety knives and peelers to chop, peel and slice the vegetables. We then spent the afternoon tasting the warm soup and bread on a cold and wet Autumn afternoon. Perfect! We had a few thumbs up from the children, so overall an enjoyable day! The children had a lovely time making soup and hedgehog bread for our changing seasons engage day. We have been very busy this week finishing off our topic on nursery rhymes. This week we have looked at Five Currant Buns, 10 Sizzling Sausages, I’m a Little Teapot and Jelly on a Plate. We have enjoyed experimenting with jelly, perfecting our scissors skills when cutting out our frying pans and sausages while also thinking about which is the shortest and which is the longest. We have also made lots of tea in our water tray and made potions using lots of lovely smelling plants. This week Turtles collected a range of leaves from our outside area to create autumnal pictures. We read and discussed the story ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Ehlert. We then collected leaves, sticks and other autumnal items from our school grounds and used them to create our own autumnal faces on the playground. In our maths this week we have been looking at repeating patterns. We made patterns with our bodies and different actions and we have used autumnal resources to create our own.
