Swans - Self-portraits

This half term Swans have been creating self-portraits. This shows the progression of skills from creating lines to the final product. These portraits have then been used as part of our history unit on significant people. 

​We started by looking at how we can use drawing pencils to create different lines and patterns.
 
Next we applied these line and patterns skills to drawings of our faces. We also looked at applying these skills to different mediums. 

​After this we looked at which parts of our faces were lighter and which were darker. We used charcoal or chalk to highlight where the light either hit or was missing from our friends faces. 

We then moved on to colour mixing. We built on our learning from Year 1 by investigating what happens when we mix not only primary but also secondary colours.  
  
Then we used the understanding of colour mixing to make colours that match the shades on our faces.
 
Finally we used all of the skills that we have gained to draw and paint our self-portraits.  

​We then used these for our history work as part of a page about ourselves in the books we are creating called ‘Fantastically Great People Who Changed the World’.
