This week the children in Lions class have been conducting scientific experiments to investigate the properties of materials. The children were tasked with finding a material that would be protective enough to keep their 'egg'stranaut safe when landing on the moon in its landing pod. The children made landing pods using a range of different materials and launched their pods over the wall onto the school sandpit. Then they carefully opened their pods to check that their 'egg'stranuts were safe and undamaged.
We celebrated World Book Day in Elephants Class by dressing up as our favourite story characters. We enjoyed sharing our stories together.
Zebras enjoyed their engage day. Firstly we were alerted to a crash site in our school which we hurried to investigate. The children were sure they saw an alien running away and looked for clues as to what it could be. We then went to the planetarium where we learned about why it is day in one half of the world while the other side is night as it is in the shadow of the sun. The children also created some beautiful artwork to make their own solar system. This week the children started their new topic about space. On Tuesday we had a wonderful engage day. In the morning the children visited Mr Barbers mobile planetarium. He told us facts about the Sun, Earth and Moon. He also told us the Myth of Orion and showed us the constellation for Orion in the night sky that was projected in the dome. Next the children visited a 'crash site' at the top of the school. A mysterious object was caught on the school's CCTV crashing into a tree. The children investigated who they thought it was and what they were doing. In the afternoon the children learnt about the planets in the Solar System. They created a piece of Solar System artwork by decorating planets with a range of media e.g. sandy paint, pastels, glitter and pens. The whole class had such a fun day and are excited to learn more about space.
5...4...3...2...1...Blast off!!! This week Elephants immersed themselves into our new space topic during our engage day. We went inside a Planetarium and saw amazing images of our solar system and stars. We also made our own planets using mixed media. There was even a mysterious crash landing site in the school. Who or what crashed? And where had it come from? Was it...Out of this world? |
