In Elephants Class, we have investigated what animals live in a land habitat – our school grounds. We noticed that most of the invertebrates were living under or in things. “They need to hide.” “ The birds want to eat them.” We also spotted that there were many birds flying over the school and landing on the school roof. Gulls were the bird we saw the most of – “…because we live near the sea.”. We enjoyed hunting for all the different animals.

Elephants had a wonderful day celebrating our learning of Pirates on Friday! We started the day measuring, adding, cracking, mixing and baking our own sea cupcakes and butter icing. We then sung songs of the sea and using the percussion instruments played the sounds of the sea. We also made our own treasure boxes to stow away our cakes. In the afternoon, we had a party in the pool playing pirate games and races on the dinghies! Finally we decorated our cupcakes by piping the icing onto the cakes and decorated them with sea sparkles. On Friday Zebras class enjoyed a pirate pool party where they played games and used the dinghies for group races. During the day the children also enjoyed mixing their own cake mixture and decorating the finished cakes as well as using the instruments to create the sounds of the sea. Finally they made a treasure chest to carry their cakes safely home. Zebras enjoyed hunting for minibeasts in the school grounds. When we went into the pond area we saw tadpoles and the frog popped up to see us too. On the way back to class we collected sticks, leaves and grass to make bug hotels which we will place in the school grounds and then see who comes to visit. The children in Year One had a fantastic Pirate Day. The children made treasure topped cupcakes, a treasure chest box to bring them home in and had their very own pirate pool party. The children had such fun on the boats in the pool. In the afternoon the children used instruments to create sounds of the sea and listened to sea shanties. Elephants Class walked with the whole school down to the Landmark Green to enjoy our lunch with our teddy bears and toys. We were also entertained with juggling and other circus skills by Matt Lemon. We all had a go at trying out our own circus skills too. We finished the afternoon with the whole school singing ' Teddy Bears Picnic.' It was a lovely lunchtime! ,The whole school had the opportunity to walk down to The Landmark Green for entertainment and circus skills with Matt Lemon, and a teddy bears picnic in Jubilee Garden. We had such a lovely afternoon. The whole school walked down to the Landmark where we enjoyed eating our picnic lunch. We were entertained with juggling and other circus skills which amazed the children. After the show they were able to have a go at using the equipment for themselves and we ended our visit by singing the Teddy Bear's Picnic song together. This week in Elephants Class, we started our new topic about Pirates! We had a great day being pirates. We made a hat, telescope and an eye patch. We sang pirate songs and drew and water coloured our own pirate crew to go on the boat that we also painted. We made a pirate treasure map to guide us on our next adventure! Aaaaarrrrr!!! Zebras class thoroughly enjoyed their Pirate Day. We learned about what pirates do and how to talk like them, then we made our pirate accessories – a hat, eye patch and telescope. We prepared some paper using tea bags to make it look old and then drew our own treasure maps, ripping them to make them look genuine. The children also painted our class pirate ship and drew their own pirates to make the crew. |
