At group time we found some freezing cold bears. The children felt their icy, cold fur and then decided how to look after them and warm them up. We have also been naming clothes and other objects and sorting these to help us understand about the cold, and changes in the weather.

We have begun the new year with the theme of "Ice and Snow." The children have been exploring the setting with lots of resources linked to the cold, and have been particularly interested in building with the transparent bricks on our frozen castle. We have had some really cold weather so the nursery children explored trays of water that we left out overnight to freeze. They were amazed by the leaves that had frozen in the ice. They were interested in looking at, feeling and even tasting the frozen sheets of ice! Later they played with some of the left over ice, polar bears and shaving foam. The children have been imaginative using the Christmas resources and have made Christmas trees using different fine motor skills. They also made an outdoor Christmas tree using natural materials and helped to decorate the tree inside. We are so proud of the amazing and joyful performance of "A First Nativity" that the children did this morning. Such enthusiastic dancing and singing! We have been talking about the dark and reading the book "Star in the Jar." The children have been investigating magnets, shiny objects and lights in the dark den. They have made glittery stars and wands at group time. We watched paper stars open, like magic, in a tray of shallow water and the children talked about their observations. Also for the children's language skills they chose stars from a feely bag and talked about them. The children made poppies to wear and learnt that we wear them to remember. We watched the video and talked about how it made us feel. The children were amazing at keeping silent for a whole minute.
For lots of the nursery children water play is their favourite thing! There is so much to learn when investigating how water moves, how different containers hold it and about what happens when it is poured or mixed. The children also show great learning behaviours like creativity, curiosity, perseverance and collaboration. During the week the children explored traditions linked to the Hindu festival of light. They investigated authentic Indian resources on the sensory table and used Indian printing blocks in playdough to make patterns. At group time the children talked about the dolls, elephant puppet and dancing sticks. They looked at pictures and books about Diwali. They also used their own experiences to make pictures of fireworks in chalk outside and in paint on black paper. The children have loved going to the big school hall to practice climbing, balancing, sliding and jumping on the apparatus. |
