Starfish made repeating patterns in their outdoor learning session this week using natural resources.
In outdoor learning this week Starfish class focussed their learning on the number 10. They wrote the number 10 in the mud with sticks, made 10 muddy handprints on the fence and collected 10 items before counting them. They also enjoyed jumping in the big muddy puddles and transporting the mud using different containers. In PE this week Starfish practised a variety of skills including throwing and catching a ball and jumping with two feet together over hurdles. They also used dribbling skills to move the football around the ‘islands’ with their feet and practised their aiming by throwing beanbags into the correct coloured hoop.
Starfish class have been learning new skills using clay. The children had designed a troll face and then made a model of it using clay. We talked about the features that the troll would have and how we could make them secure. Making a mixture of clay and a small amount of water, the children had their own pot of ‘slip’ which is like a glue for modelling. They learnt how to cross hatch and then added the slip before attaching the various parts of the face. Starfish class have been learning about 2D shapes this week through lots of different activities. They have sorted shapes into groups of squares, rectangles, circles and triangles and also used the shapes to create shape pictures. They have made 2D shapes using the pegs and peg boards and made their own shapes using the connect-o-straws, as well as drawn and labelled shapes that they know.
The children have made Chinese Lanterns, dragons, and masks using different skills. They have enjoying role playing in the Chinese restaurant. Starfish have been busy with lots of Christmas activities again this week. They have been building a sleigh for Santa from the large building blocks, writing letters and sending parcels in the Post Office role play and writing toy lists in the writing area. They have also been dusting the frost off the animals, drawing snowmen on the interactive whiteboard and making a class Christmas post box.
In Starfish the children have been exploring the Christmas continuous provision within the classroom. There have been letters to Santa written, exploring one more and one less with the snowman's buttons and decorating the class Christmas tree. Practising their fine motor skills the children created Christmas trees and stars with the playdough and used loose parts to decorate them and they created their own Christmas stories using the puppets in the small world tray.
Starfish enjoyed the process of making salt dough for the lamp base. Then they cooked it in the oven, painted it and coated it in PVA glue to make it shiny.
